Post Flood advice if You've been affected by flooding - what happens now? Initial actions you should take Contact your insurance company. Do not attempt to do anything until you have spoken to your insurer; the majority of household policies provide insurance cover on flooding . Not insured? Contact the Citizens Advice Bureau for further advice. Visit their website for contact details of your nearest office: www.citizensadvice.co.uk . Ensure all electrical and gas supplies are not in use. If you have been evacuated from your home do not re-enter until you are told it is safe to return. The clean up operation - who'se involved Over the course of the clean up process you will be in contact with a number of people who will assist you. Your insurance company Your insurer should be the first person you speak to. They will advise you on your cover and the process you will go through to rectify the damage, from initial safety checking and strip out process to property repairs. Restoration specialists  such as Chem-Dry will asist with the immediate clean up operation which may include disposal of damaged items and drying out your home. A restoration company will normally be appointed by your insurer. Brokers and Loss Adjusters Working independently or on behalf of your insurance company, brokers and loss adjusters play an important part during the life of your claim, ensuring that the claims process runs as smoothly as possible for you. Building contractors Once the restoration specialists have completed their initial works, in most cases, your insurer will appoint a builder to undertake repairs and reconstruction works. Useful Contacts For information about the aftermath of a fire and flood damage insurance visit the Association of British Insurers  (ABI) website: www.abi.org.uk For advice on basic flood recovery and procedures visit the British Damage Management Association.
